What is the good of your stars and trees, your sunrise and the wind, if they do not enter into our daily lives?
~E.M. Forster
And sometimes, our daily lives bring us into the presence of starry trees. I came across this sprawling vine maple while hiking along the Trillium Trail in the Redmond Watershed Preserve two weeks ago. I was struck immediately by the way its vivid green leaves hung from the branches and formed a low ceiling of tiny earthly stars suspended just overhead, almost within reach.

This was one of those moments where one encounters the unexpected, the lovely, the "something rare" in nature that demands you stop to appreciate it.
